How long have you been natural?:
Officially it will be nearly two years this Summer.
Why did you go natural?:
I only had relaxed hair for a year, but for my whole life leading up to that point, I never embraced my natural hair, nor did I take care of it. Going natural initially came from a lack of availability/affordability of relaxers where I lived, but it soon turned into a new found confidence and pride in what grew from my head!
A short regimen you can share:
On a perfect wash day (which I do every two weeks), I always make sure to pre-poo and detangle, shampoo to get rid of all the build up, deep condition, and wrap it up with the LOC method before styling. For me, the key is keeping the pre-poo and the DC in for as long as I can possibly manage.
What are some of your favorite products?:
I am a huge Product Junkie, so there are a million different products in my drawer. Current faves are SheaMoisture’s Manuka Honey + Mafura Oil Hair Masque, Camille Rose Natural’s Caramel Cowash, and EVERYTHING Oyin Handmade!
What are some of your favorite styles?:
Twist out, twist out, twist out! It’s easy, and I love the end results.
What is your most favorite and least thing about being natural?:
Most Favorite: That it is 100% me! I feel like when I am wearing my hair out, I am showing people my true self. I used to keep it hidden with buns and headbands through most of my teenaged years, so now that I’m finally embracing being natural, I am more comfortable and confident in my own skin.
Least Favorite: I live on the West Coast of Canada, where there isn’t a huge Natural Hair Community. As a result, Natural Hair Products are extremely hard to come by!! I either have to order online, or drive across the border to find the same products most American Curlies can find in the drugstore!
What is one piece of advice that all women should have(pertaining to confidence)?:
I feel as though this has been said a million times, but don’t compare yourself to others.
The moment I embraced the uniqueness of my texture instead of comparing it to what I saw on Youtube, I instantly felt more confident. As women, we get so caught up in taking notes on the qualities we don’t have, that we often don’t stop to think about the beauty in the features we were born with.
What natural hair bloggers/vloggers inspire you?:
From the beginning of my journey, my biggest inspiration has been Naptural85. She seems so laid back, comfortable in her own skin, and never tries to be something she’s not.
Do you have any advice on going natural?:
Go in with no expectations besides healthy hair, and enjoy every stage! Whether you Big Chop or Transition, I feel like we all are rushing to waist-length hair, and not enjoying the benefits of every length in-between.
