Hey, Curlies!

Sometimes we give our hair so much love we forget about its foundation – the scalp. A healthy and happy scalp means thriving hair. Some scalps produce enough natural oils on their own, but some of us are left with dry scalps that are nothing short of concerning.

Do you need to oil your dry scalp? If so, how much oil? The answer to this question depends solely on the person. There is no one-size-fits-all answer here. Chances are you’re here because you have a dry scalp, so let’s talk about a few solutions.

How to Fix Your Dry Scalp

Scalp Massage

When your scalp is dry, a lot of times it’s inflamed due to all of the itching you’re doing. A soothing oil massage might do the trick. Remember, oil is not a moisturizer, so it’s best to perform a scalp massage immediately after cleansing and conditioning your hair (while it’s wet). This way, the oil you massage into your scalp will help seal in the moisture from the water.

Try using light oils like jojoba or sweet almond oil. Apply a little to your fingertips and massage for 5-10 minutes.

Scalp Rinse

You all know that I’m a huge fan of hair rinses. It’s why I included one in the line of Make It Classy Products. Hair rinses are a way for you to take advantage of the healing properties of herbs. One plant that helps tremendously with a dry, flaky scalp is witch hazel. You can make your own hair rinse using witch hazel bark and infusing it into water overnight. The next morning, pour that infusion directly onto your scalp.

If you’re not into the do-it-yourself thing, you can buy a bottle of organic witch hazel and do the same.

Essential oils

You can practically use essential oils for everything, right? There is no exception for your scalp. Essential oils have great healing properties. You just need to know which to use. It’s important to point out that essential oils should not be utilized on their own. You’ll need to find a carrier oil (olive, jojoba, sweet almond, grapeseed, etc.) and mix in a few drops of the essential oil. Failure to do so can do more harm than good as essential oils are very potent. You could make your scalp problem worse.

Essential oils like peppermint, spearmint, chamomile, and tea tree are excellent to use along with a carrier oil. Apply directly to the scalp daily.

CBD oil also provides excellent skincare results, and these bath bombs are a fantastic choice for anyone who wants to try it out for the first time! CBD is a naturally-occuring substance humans have used for hundreds of years, and it’s recently become ever more popular with the general public.

Take your vitamins

What if your scalp issues started with an internal issue? Your body may be vitamin deficient and that’s why you’re experiencing a dry, flaky and inflamed scalp. Be sure to eat food and/or take supplements with Vitamin D and B. In addition, make sure you’re getting enough Omega-3 fatty acids. From personal experience, I also found that olive leaf supplements help keep my scalp healthy.

As always, be sure you consult your doctor before starting any new supplements.
