There is a heated debate in the natural hair community about if coloring your hair counts as applying a chemical to your hair. If I were to answer this question I would say, it depends on your method of coloring. There are safe ways of coloring without doing damage.
I actually thought about coloring my hair last year, but I realized how much I love my natural hair color and decided against it.
If you aren’t sure which way to lean when it comes to coloring, you are in the right place!
What’s the Difference??
- Semi-Permanent- Color enters the cortex and stains the cuticle. Should always be done by a professional
- Permanent- The cuticle is lifted and the cortex is penetrated. Should always be done by a professional
- Henna- It is a plant based powder that is used in Africa, India, Asia and different parts of the middle east. It will stain the hair usually a red color. Other colors are available but they have been enhanced with dyes to achieve another color than redish;be aware of unnatural henna.
- Temporary(color)- Doesn’t chemically alter your hair. It simply coats the surface. This usually rinses out after 10+ washes. It enhances your natural color and will create a darker color (THE SAFEST/Natural). Try your local Whole Foods, Indian market or www.mehandi.com
Got Grey Hair?
Grey hair isn’t grown directly from the scalp. It is actually hair that has no pigment and is clear. It seems to appear grey because it is in contrast with the other hair color surrounding it.
Things to Remember:
- Colored hair can sometimes feel dry and brittle. This is why more care is needed for colored hair. Try a color safe shampoo and conditioner.
- Before coloring, always deep condition the hair with a moisturizing and protein conditioner.
Look out for more information in the future on Henna and grey hair.
