Hey Curlies,

The great part about curly hair is its versatility. Straight styles require a heat protectant to shield the hair from damage. I have listed a few heat protectants you can find at your local drugstore.

Some are heat protectant sprays and great for flat ironing, while others are heat protectant oils and may be better for blow drying curly hair.

While using heat you must be very careful and always use a heat protectant to avoid damage.

Here are a few reminders for using heat as well as a recommendation list of great heat protectants. I have personally used all of them at some point.

Remember:

  • Healthy hair burns at 451 degrees F
  • Water begins to leave the hair at around 122-248 degrees F
  • Hair proteins begin to break at 311 F degrees

Heat Protectant Recommendation List:

TRESemme Heat Tamer Spray

I used this product a lot when I decided to blow out my hair. I spray it on wet hair right before I begin working with the blow dryer using the tension method. This heat protectant spray can be found at most drugstores.

Nubian Heritage Heat Protect Keratin Spray

I use this product on damp hair before I blow out my hair by also using the tension method. It can be found at most Walgreens stores.

Grapeseed Oil

Did you know that grapeseed oil is one of the best natural heat protectants? If I don’t have any of the products above, this is what I use. You can find this oil heat protectant in most grocery stores where you’d find olive oil.
