Hey, Curlies!

Have you ever had a week where you second guess everything about your life? Your career choice, relationships, and even what you ate for dinner last night. You have no idea where you’re going because sometimes, you don’t really know where you are.

I felt like this recently, and once I got out of my funk, I wanted to share some inspiration with you.

The mind-body connection we have with ourselves isn’t always going to be perfect, and sometimes we’re going to feel a little off. What always gets me back on track is my “happy list.” I whip it out whenever I’m in an off mood, and suddenly I feel better.

What is a ‘happy list?’

It’s exactly what it sounds like – a list of all of the things that truly make me happy. Why does this work? The same reason why people leave sticky notes on their mirror reminding them of how beautiful they are.

It’s also the same reason why we wear affirmation bracelets or stones around our necks. The physical connection is a reminder for us.

Sure, when we’re in a bad mood we can try to recall the things that make us happy, but chances are – we’re in such a horrible mood that it’s going to be difficult to figure out what those things are. If you have a list handy, you take away the “thinking” part and you’re more likely to get out of your funk.

So what’s on my ‘happy list?’

I have quite a lengthy list, but I want to share a few with you:

  • Connecting with nature: Especially during the fall season, I love to walk outside and breathe in the fresh air while admiring the colors. Seriously, every single year I smile so hard the moment I see cranberry or golden-colored leaves on a tree.
  • Crank up my playlist: Yes, I do have a music playlist called “happy.” It is full of uplifting songs from literally every genre. They are the songs about confidence, positive body image and just being a boss lol.
  • Meditation: Sometimes I don’t realize I’m in a bad mood because I need to slow down and take a few moments to breathe. This is where meditation comes in. Even just 5-10 minutes works wonders and helps me reflect on my problems. You can learn more about my meditation rituals here.

I have tons of other items on my list too, but the key here is to make sure you write them down. Let me tell you, this does not work unless you make note of these items somewhere you can easily find them (paper, phone, tablet, audio voice memo, etc).

Again, we think we know what makes us happy and are sure that we will be able to think of those things the moment we get upset. It doesn’t happen like that. Try whipping out your happy list and you’ll set yourself up for success.

I recommend creating this list when you have plenty of free time and without distractions. Find time to sit down and truly think about what your list should look like.
