Hey Curlies,

I have been coming across a few questions lately that I think need to be answered. Some of these questions I am personally asked and others are just floating about in the natural hair community. I hope this Q&A answers all of your questions, and if not, feel free to ask away!

Q: If you were put a texturizer in your hair, is it still natural?
A: No, any type of chemical put into your hair will alter your curl pattern. Texturizers can give the same permanent straightening effect as a relaxer.

Q: How do I get rid of shrinkage?
A: There are a couple of ways to help solve this problem. To stretch your hair you can braid, twist or do roller sets. Also products with water in them causes your hair to revert back to its curly state and “snap” back into the shrinkage state.

Q: How can I trim my ends if I have an afro?
A: You can split you hair into sections then braid each section and snip off the dead ends. Similar to this detangling video.

Q: What are some styles for the winter months?
A: Any style that protect your ends. During the winter month your hair tends to be more drier which causes breakage. Twist, braids, sew ins, wigs or any type of updo.

Q: If I am not African African American, is it okay for me to use “ethnic” products?
A:Yes, and vice versa. I believe that the “black” and “white” people products are a marketing strategy.

Q: How often should I wash my hair?
A: It really depends on if you experience dandruff or not and how your hair feels. I tend to wash my hair when it seems really dry or too oily. You’ll know when you need to wash. I tend to wash about every 2 weeks.
