Hey Curlies,

There are certain parts of our hair we are told are most important – like our fragile ends. What about our scalps? I argue that scalps are just as important due to the fact that they are the source of our curls.

Many times, we don’t pay much attention to our scalps until there is a problem. Suffering from an itchy scalp is one of those annoying cases that takes all of your attention.

If you’re scratching your scalp often and left with a dry, irritated scalp, several things could be the cause.

Our scalps naturally produce its own oil called sebum. Honestly, our bodies can have a love/hate relationship with sebum. Too much of it can cause acne. Too little leaves you with a dry, flaky scalp.

If you believe you have just a minor case of the itchies and want to try some home remedies for your scalp, I’ve got your back. Here are a few all-natural approaches to clearing up your itchy scalp that I use often:

  • Essential Oils – Essential oils heal the body (and mind) in tons of different ways. Since they are so powerful, you’ll need to mix them with a carrier oil like coconut, jojoba or sweet almond oil among others. I love to mix either peppermint oil or tea tree oil with rosehip seed oil. I also use these combinations on my face daily.

Mix the two oils and apply them directly to your itchy area once per day.

  • Aloe Vera – Aloe vera can also be used for for everything and acts as a soothing gel or juice. It can add moisture and treat any troubled areas.

Extract aloe vera straight from the plant (learn how to do this here) or buy a bottle of the gel from your local health food store. Mix one part aloe vera with one part distilled water, and a few drops of tea tree oil in a bottle with a nozzle tip. Apply directly to your scalp daily.

  • Oil Rinsing – This is the one step I feel every curly should include into their natural hair routine. Oil rinsing gives your curls and your scalp a moisture boost.

While treatment is great, the most important factor is finding out why your scalp is itchy in the first place.

If itchiness is persistent, I recommend visiting a dermatologist to find out what is the true problem.
