Hey Curlies!
When I did my big chop in the summer of 2011, I was super excited. I cut my hair in my bathroom and I can remember my mother’s face when she saw my process (her mouth dropped).
I finally got to see my actual hair texture and I was finally fully natural. I also found a downside to all of this happiness, my hair was drier than the desert.

I now know that once you big chop, moisture is very important. Here are some ways and styles to cope with this problem.
- Don’t forget to deep condition. It is almost as if when you cut the relaxed ends off, the natural hair goes into a state of shock. I usually deep condition my hair using Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque. I’ll apply it to my hair and then put on a plastic shower cap. I’ll let it sit on there for about an hour or more, depending on what I’m doing.
- Cowashing is also a great method to use. Cowashing is when you cleanse the hair using only conditioner instead of shampoo. Cowashing adds extra moisture that your hair lacks soon after BCing. I did this about once or twice a week.
- Going back to moisturizing and sealing. This method traps in the moisture applied to the hair by applying an oil after the moisturizer. Be sure to complete this step after every wash or cowash and daily as needed.

I am also actually thinking about Henna down the road 🙂
I experienced the same exact thing. Although, I never BCed. Coconut and Castor oil are my friends. They are great with sealing and thickening your hair. My next mission is Henna.
