Life can be a bit much sometimes. Everyone feels down now and then, even when there is no obvious reason to. There are times when you just want to crawl into bed and hide from the world.
If you’re having a bad day and need cheering up, the best way to get a little joy into your life is to treat yourself. Sometimes the only way to kick out the bad feelings and get back to normal is to do something that makes you feel good. Big or small, it doesn’t matter what it is, as long as it gives you some happiness.
Here are some ideas to help you treat yourself today and send your bad mood packing.
Have a Candlelit Bath
There’s nothing more relaxing than a nice, warm soak in the tub, perhaps with some chilled-out music and scented candles in the background. Add a glass of wine, and a facial mask and you’ve got yourself the perfect evening. Let your troubles wash away as you immerse yourself in the bubbly waters.
Cook Some Comfort Food
Food makes everything better, and sometimes all you need is a home-cooked meal. Whatever your favorite, most comforting dish is, get the ingredients and spend some time lovingly preparing it for yourself. It can be anything you want – sometimes you have to ignore healthy diets and eat what makes you feel good. You could always order takeout, but the very act of cooking can be immensely calming.
Read a Good Book
When real life is too stressful, you can always escape into the world of fiction. Lose yourself in your favorite book, and let your anxieties slip away. Whether it’s escapist fantasy, a mood-boosting romance, or an inspirational biography, you have an entire world of literature from which to choose. Here are some good suggestions.
Get a Massage
The body retains negative emotions in the form of tightness and tension. A good massage can release all your pent-up emotions and leave you feeling calm and happy. Book a session with a registered massage therapist or even ask a partner or friend to give you one.
Have a Singalong
Music is a proven way of lifting your spirits and reducing feelings of stress and anxiety. Make a feel-good playlist of your favorite uplifting songs and play it at full volume. Sing at the top of your voice and dance around your bedroom like you don’t have a care in the world. I actually have a playlist titled, “Happy” on Spotify that is made of my favorite uplifting songs.
Spend time with animals
Animals are incredibly therapeutic. Just a short time stroking a cat or a dog can dramatically reduce any negative emotions. Take some time out to hang out with your pet if you have one. If not, chances are you have a friend or family member who does.
Laugh
They say laughter is the best medicine, and they’re not wrong. We all have a tendency to take life too seriously sometimes when all we need is a good chuckle. Put on your favorite comedy movie or TV series, read a funny book, or invite your friends over for a laugh.
